Gig Review: The Vaccines at Southampton Guildhall

This year for Valentine’s Day, I spent it amongst other music lovers at Southampton Guildhall for The Vaccines Pick-Up Full Of Pink Carnations tour with support from Divorce and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Both are amazing choices for this tour and set the atmosphere for the evening.

The opening support came from Nottingham’s Divorce who describe their style as alt-country/grunge. After being a fan of their music for a while, I was finally able to see them live, and they were brilliant. Having released their EP back in 2023, Heady Metal, they opened with the lead song from the same EP. ‘Sex & The Millennium Bridge’. Both Felix’s and Tiger’s harmonies blend beautifully alongside the guitar parts, making it a fantastic opener to their set.

Next up, were a 4 piece from Australia, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Slightly different style from the first band but equally as impressive live. Their post-grunge, punk rock style is something I am a big fan of. As well as playing a blend of old and new songs, they also threw in a fantastic cover of Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever with their twist.

Finally, time for the main event, which comes as a homecoming show for singer Justin, who grew up along the road in the New Forest.
Opening with a new song, Love To Walk Away, off their latest album. They certainly showed the sold-out show why they are more than your typical indie band and are incredible performers.

Showcasing his excellent vocal skills and dance moves, Justin is a fantastic frontman and you can tell how much he enjoys being back in his home city. Commenting on one memory of being at the guildhall when he was younger and being told off for skateboarding on the steps outside.

Having only seen The Vaccines for the first time at Victorious Festival last year, I can now see why they are such a highly rated band to see live as the five-piece blasted their way through a set list filled with back catalogues songs as well as some new ones mixed in between.

The Vaccines are more than just firm indie favourites, they are a band who have grown with every album they have released and just get better each show they do. The Vaccine’s music creates a great gig atmosphere and with their relatable lyrics and enthusiastic dancing, they are an absolute joy to watch.
