She_Captures Online Exhibition ‘Portsmouth in 24 Hours’

She_Captures are a small women’s photography group that has been actively meeting, going on trips, sharing knowledge and participating in projects for around two years. All of the group members are amateur photographers and are at various stages in their learning and experience, the emphasis of the group is on fun and support.

Photographers involved in the event include Anna Chalk, Christine Matchett, Emma Oliver, Lisa Mundy, Mel Price, Sue Woodbridge and Sarah Marston.

Following on from a successful pop-up exhibition in a seafront shelter in May 2019, some members of the group embarked on a project to photograph Portsmouth over a 24 hour period.

The event was planned to coincide with the weekend of the Kite Festival and other local events, however, adverse weather meant activities were drastically scaled back, creating some real photographic challenges. Last August he group started photographing an area of Portsmouth at 10 am and moved onto a new location every hour until 10 am on the following day.

Some members of the group chose to photograph the whole 24 hours whilst others chose specific hours to join up with the group. Sarah Marston from the group explained, “We agreed in advance that once the sun had set then we would stay together and would cap the event off with a well-earned breakfast at Southsea Beach Cafe.”

Sarah added, “The event was great fun but extremely tiring however, the group are not ruling out repeating the event in future.”

The group had hoped to replicate their pop-up exhibition from 2019 but the current lockdown situation has meant this is not possible. So they have decided to share the exhibition online from 10 am on

An online exhibition seemed to be the obvious solution and we hope you enjoy viewing it as much as we enjoyed taking part. The online exhibition will be live from 10 am on May 8th at www.shecaptures.com.

There is also a limited number of A4 zines that will be given away through the new @she_capturessouth page or via “Freeart Friday” drops around the city.
