‘Routes to Market’ 2 Day Maker Development Event with Making Space

This October Making Space will be hosting 2 training events led by renowned surface textile designer, Emma Jeffs. Emma has a successful career across hand, industrial and digital textiles processes and is coming to Making Space to inject and energise makers into broadening their understanding about other ways of working. Emma has worked with a broad range of creative industry partners, from Made.com, National Trust to Tupperware and is an experience mentor and trainer within the Craft and Design sector.

Emma will offer a unique insight based on her experiences in undertaking commissions and negotiating terms with industry. Her talks will inspire other designer-makers to consider the complexities involved when developing business propositions, developing limited edition or batch production to licensing work for reproduction. Emma’s talk will appeal to all image makers who are keen expand knowledge, foster relationships and create new opportunities. As with all our events, designer-makers are encouraged to share ideas and network to help build the sector locally.

For those interested there are also ten 20-minute 1-2-1 mentoring sessions available. These are booked on a first come first served basis.

Talk 1 | Thursday 5 October | 10am

Developing your craftwork so that it can be produced for batch production, wider distribution and sales.

This talk is about developing your craftwork so that it can be produced for wide distribution markets and sales. It is important to understand what batch production means and when it might be relevant to your craft practice. This talk is suitable for those who are self-employed, working for a sole practitioner or within a workshop or studio. Emma will use the Case study of My Adhesive Window film Product which she launched in 2005 at a small trade show to handing over the product to a USA manufacture with a worldwide licensing agreement in 2012. Emma will discuss the journey of how she moved from maker i.e. making in her own studio to then finding manufacturers , to produce it (batch production) to selling it worldwide (working with distributors/agents) to then finally licensing with a USA company (Royalties and licensing agreements). She will cover; mistakes, lessons learnt and best practice. Emma will end by summarising key points and answering questions.

This talk is for all those interested in working to commission. It is important to understand what working to commission entails and if it is relevant to your craft practice. This will be an overview of the commissioning process. This talk is suitable for those who are self-employed, working for a sole practitioner or within a workshop or studio. Emma will give a brief overview of some of the commissions she has undertaken and some other makers, in scale and types of clients and what was involved. Emma will cover the type of business propositions for commissions B2B (interior designers, architecture, public art) and B2C ( the general public). What a commission entails and Do you have the personality and skills for working to commission? Understanding Bespoke or Customised craftwork. Pricing your work, and a brief overview of Managing a Commission and Contracts.
