Pigeon Books Recommendations: May 2022

I’m fashionably late as usual – it’s almost a week into May already!

It’s been a fantastic start to the month, though. The weather has brought out the browsers and there’s a definite buzz returning to Albert Road.

We recently put on our launch event for ‘Stunner’, the beautiful new book about Fanny Cornforth, the pre-Raphaelite ‘supermodel’ of her day by art historian Kirsty Stonell Walker.

The evening had cake, bubbly booze and all of the chat and entertainment you’d want from a book launch – the book has been a hit so far, and we’ve got copies still available in case you couldn’t make it along.

We were also due to have a second launch event this week, for ‘Welcome To St. Hell’, the brilliant new graphic novel by Lewis Hancox, however that one has unfortunately been pushed back to next month due to publishing delays.

We will, however, hopefully be having some sort of get-together to celebrate the long-awaited release of ‘Wired Differently’, the new book by local comedy hero Joe Wells – keep an eye on our usual social channels for more information on that once we have it.

As far as non-local releases go this month – it’s been all about ‘Heartstopper’! The LGBT+ inclusive graphic novel series is now up to it’s 4th volume – however the recent Netflix adaptation has meant that demand has gone through the roof, and all 4 are currently being reprinted, alongside a new TV tie-in edition with bonus scripts included.

For anyone who’s been waiting on them – the reprints are due to be finished this week, so we’ll let you know as soon as they’re available again.

Other fiction highlights this month have been ‘How To Kill Your Family’ by Bella Mackie and ‘Malibu Rising’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid – both now available in paperback after successful hardback runs.

As always, I’ll sign off with a reminder that if we don’t have something on the shelf – it’s no hassle to try and order it for you, so please always give us a try before resorting to the evil online overlords!
