Gig Preview: Father John Misty at Portsmouth Guildhall

One of the most creative and engaging acts to emerge over the last decade, Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty will be returning to Portsmouth this coming Saturday (11th March) as part of the European leg of his world tour.

The Father John Misty live experience is certainly something to behold. In the ten years since emerging from behind the drum kit (Tillman used to play in Fleet Foxes) he has built up a fearsome reputation for his live shows. Tillman’s on stage persona is at once both acerbically witty and touchingly soulful, flitting between full band rock stomps and introspective ballads with ease. A charismatic, entertaining force for sure yet for all the showmanship and pomp the fact remains that Tillman possesses such a heartbreakingly beautiful singing voice.

Promoting last year’s record ‘Chloe and the next 20th Century’ – his fifth and arguably finest album to date – the show is billed as ‘an evening with Father John MIsty’ suggesting something very much in the style of the old-school Hollywood crooner he seems to have embodied on that record. Expect to be dazzled
