Gig Review: Emeli Sande at the Portsmouth Guildhall

Tuesday evening the Portsmouth Guildhall was filled with an array of fans of accomplished singer/songwriter Emeli Sandè, for this date of her ‘Real Life’ tour. Read All About it!

Emeli was supported by Glaswegian busker Ben Monteith who was discovered by Emeli whilst filming her documentary series for BBC Scotland Emeli Sandè’s Street Symphony.

Armed with his acoustic guitar and a foot drum Ben warmed the audience up nicely with a mix of humour, his own music and a rather good cover of The Killers Mr Brightside, which had the audience enthusiastically singing along, before ending his set with his original song Home, which is a touching tribute to his wife.

Emeli hit the stage with a beaming smile and took to the piano and kicked off her show with Survivor, followed by her first solo hit Heaven which got an excited and warm response from the crowd.

Emeli then made reference to our current political climate when introducing her track Human, expressing her dismay at the current division in the UK and encouraged everyone to embrace differences and get along. This received a loud and unified response from the audience who seemed to be in agreement.
Her number one hit Read All About It, had the audience singing along with an army of mobile phone lights swaying across the auditorium, then hit Next To Me had the audience up on their feet and singing and dancing towards the stage to get up close to Emeli.

Finishing the evening with You Are Not Alone, Emeli performed an impressive 16 song set with a particular highlight being her second number one hit Beneath Your Beautiful, that she wrote with Mike Posner and her partner on the duet Labrinth. She sang this with backing vocalist Matt Matt Maijah this evening who did a superb job!

Emeli’s vocals were both powerful and delicate throughout and definitely the best I’ve heard live in a while, she captivated the audience from the moment she walked on stage with these and her warm and charismatic personality. Her band and backing vocalists complimented her perfectly, and the stage this evening was filled with extremely talented, Extraordinary Beings!
