Local resident Helen ‘Aitch’ Buteux completed an amazing solo charity cycle ride from Bangkok to Phuket last week in aid of SSAFA Forces Help. Cycling over 900 kilometres in only 8 days, riding solo and unsupported, Helen still found time to update her Facebook and Twitter with her adventures on her trip through Thailand. To give you an idea of what the ride was like here are some photos and an update sent to Strong Island whilst mid ride. You can still donate by clicking on Just Giving and you can also find out more on Twitter.
“So mostly I’m doing 100-120km a day starting at 3.30am in dark as it’s over 35 degrees by 9 am and like cycling in an oven with a strong hot headwind. So far averaging 17-20km an hour. Getting hilly now! Suffering sunburnt legs (didn’t cycle fast enough, sun caught me), heat rash, chaffing, cuts and bruises, damaged knee from coming a cropper today, 2 fingers now like a claw from nerve issues/pressure on racing position so they don’t work. Apart from that it’s going great. Get chased by couple of dozen raging dogs every day which helps me cycle quicker I guess. 104 km tomorrow.”
A huge well done from us at Strong Island on completing such an incredible achievement.

I’m off to Thailand for the second time in December…not sure I’ll be taking a bike with me though!
