PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA'S No.1 for ARTS, CULTURE & LIFESTYLE

The Portsmouth Society

The Portsmouth Society is a voluntary organisation interested in preserving the best of Portsmouth’s environment: buildings, streets, open spaces and seashore, and in encouraging well designed new buildings and amenities. They are the local Civic Society, registered with Civic Voice which is a national body working to make the places where everyone lives more attractive, enjoyable and distinctive and are one of a thousand such groups nationally, which promote and celebrate high standards of architecture and planning and public facilities in their area. The Society subsist solely on members’ subscriptions and donations which allows us to be a genuinely independent body – not an offshoot of any political party or of Portsmouth City Council.

If you are interested in your city and local architecture and environment it is well worth keeping an eye on the Society’s website and if you want to get more heavily involved joining the society, only £10 a year (full details and forms on the website). The latest newsletter includes interesting subjects such as the derelict buildings on the seafront, pedestrianisation of Commercial Road (South) and Edinburgh Road (East), book reviews, information on local walks, etc you can view the newsletter here (PDF).

The Portsmouth Society are doing good work for the city – we’ve been fortunate enough to win 5 restoration awards / commendations from them over the years – it’s nice to get a pat on the back now and then! Much appreciated.
