There was an interesting documentary on Channel 4 last night all about Portsmouth’s latest navy warship the HMS Daring. The Daring is the first of a new class (Type 45) warship used for air defence and in many ways the £1 Billion ship pushes the envelop on new technology and design. One particularly noticeable new feature to the ship is the Sampson multi-function radar mast, which should look familiar to everyone as there has been a test prototype overlooking the city from Portsdown Hill for some time. The cutting edge radar system makes HMS Daring the most powerful air-defence warship in the world which can detect 100s of targets out to a distance of 400 km (250 miles) and use the PAAMS missile system to guide the missiles to multiple targets at once.
The documentary covers the life of the ship from design to build to sea trials and is well worth a watch over at 4OD here.
