Lomography has it’s roots back in the 1990s when two Austrian students discovered the LC-A camera, manufactured by Russian optics company Lomo. Initially taken with the camera’s lofi film photographic results the two students struck a deal to distribute the camera and Lomography quickly turned from a small company in to more of a global photographic community with the lofi, cheap, candid and colourful aesthetic still at it’s heart. Lomography now produce a wide range of film camera, film and accessories that millions of people use with the Lomography 10 Golden Rules:
- Take your camera everywhere you go
- Use it any time – day and night
- Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it
- Try the shot from the hip
- Approach the objects of your lomographic desire as close as possible
- Don’t think (william firebrace)
- Be fast
- You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film
- Afterwards either
- Don’t worry about any rules
Lomography products are stocked in Southsea by Bored in Albert Road and Southsea itself has a small and growing community of Lomography advocates, with many photos finding their way in to the Southsea Lomo Flickr group. Awesome, thanks for the mention.
I have to be honest though, over the last couple of month I’ve begun to wonder if Lomography as a company is much more than an amazing marketing team. I recently started importing Holgas and the number of people who have sent me stroppy e-mails and even phoned me up to give me a piece of their mind for selling ‘Knock-Off Chinese Made Holgas’ and threatening to report me to Lomograhpy is amazing.
However I still absolutely love the results that can be achieved (as you selection shows) with Holgas and Lomography cameras and I fully recommend people try it. I have a couple of spare Holgas that I’d be willing to lend out (for a refundable damage deposit) should anyone want to have a go in the Portsmouth area.

My only wish is that medium format development was a bit cheaper and could be done locally.
