‘Tales from the Dresser’ by Jacqui Mair with Emily Maude at Jack House Gallery

THE FIRST TIME THAT JACQUI MAIR AND HER DAUGHTER EMILY MAUDE HAVE SHARED AN EXHIBITION TOGETHER

Tales from the Dresser‘ at Jack House Gallery in Old Portsmouth is the first time that Jacqui Mair and her daughter Emily Maude have shared an exhibition together, a celebration of the mutual love of a dresser invented or otherwise. Jacqui’s dresser at home layers an abundance of vessels that appear and disappear. The shelves may share the space with stuffed birds and flowers anything and everything might make its way to be displayed. The joy of the collector’s piece next to the junk shop find is often the inspiration of the next collage or painting…The love of painting furniture with pattern and colour was very much a part of Jacqui’s life early on in her career, the special dresser created in the gallery for this exhibition celebrates Bloomsbury and the love of decoration.

The exhibition opens with a viewing on Thursday 1st of December 6-8pm, and will run through to 15th January 2023 with the gallery open times of 12-5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Emily Maude lives in Brighton and has her studio based in her gorgeous home. Surrounded by the beautiful eclectic objects that inhabit her work. Imagined worlds are created with her heritage ceramic collections of antique fabrics and patterns either in gouache on handmade paper, or acrylic on glass, each one totally unique. Emily has sold her collections internationally to clients including Paul Smith, Anthropologie and Fragonard and many of her pieces are housed in private collections throughout the world.

Our Portsmouth house came with an original dresser and it provided the best backdrop for Christmases and birthdays bringing joy to our lives. It even had a great cupboard for hide & seek underneath!” – Emily Maude

They both delight in the pleasure of pattern and colour rejoicing in the vessels, platters and plates that appear in both their work. They share a love of Charleston, which Emily was often visiting with her mother from a very early age. The love of painting furniture with pattern and colour was very much a part of Jacqui’s life early on in her career, the special dresser created in the gallery for this exhibition celebrates Bloomsbury and the love of decoration.
