A little while ago John got in touch to let us know about Rugby Against Cancer, a local organisation and event with the aim to use rugby to raise awareness and funding for cancer related charities. John has played rugby in Portsmouth for 6 maybe 7 years, and over 20 years in total and loved every minute of it. Within Portsmouth and the surrounding area there are teams such as the Southsea Nomads RFC, US Portsmouth RFC, Portsmouth RFC, Gosport RFC, Havant RFC and Fareham RFC plus you have US Portsmouth Seahawks RL, a lot of teams in such a small area.
“I personally know 5 people who have/had Cancer that are involved in these clubs and I’ve seen how it has affected these people and those who know them. I’ve also had very close family and friends who have had Cancer and I have seen first hand the effect that this awful cancer has on them and also their family and friends. I have been thinking about how to raise valuable funds for local and some national Cancer charities and it just clicked….RUGBY. I…have witnessed first hand how the RUGBY family comes together to support each other. The rugby community truly is amazing and really pulls together to help others where needed, so that got me thinking could I use rugby to help raise funds for these charities?“
On the 4th of August you can get involved with Summer Time Rugby event, from Rugby Against Cancer. The event sees a number of different rugby games to watch including Women’s Rugby and Touch Rugby. There will also be family fun activities, raffles plus a BBQ and more, all for only £3 for adults and £1 for under 16s. Head down to the Clarence Parade Rugby Pitch and help support the cause and the event’s different cancer charities.
