I have always favoured Eastern European / Mediterranean shops over your standard (and extremely over priced) Co-ops et al. And being a huge fan of the Mediterranean Supermarket on Elm Grove you can imagine my delight upon seeing the new kid on the block Abbas Supermarket (two doors down from The One Eyed Dog). All pretty much standard fare; fresh fruit and veg, spices, pulses and the all important meat counter. Give me these independent food shops over your chains any day.
