An Introduction to Watercolour Workshop at Aspex

On the 4th of March Aspex are hosting An Introduction to Watercolour Workshop, introducing people to painting with watercolour with local artist Kevin Dean. Watercolour is one of the most versatile and fascinating of all the paint mediums. It has a reputation for being difficult to use but as with any art form it’s simply a matter of practice and understanding watercolour’s capabilities and it soon becomes a joy to use! In this workshop participants will learn different wash techniques, how to use resist materials and create numerous textures and effects using watercolour.

You will also experiment with some simple mono-printing, which can be achieved with watercolour, acrylic paints and water based inks. Towards the end of the session, all of these techniques can be incorporated into one or two paintings.

Ability Range & Materials

Suitable for anyone, from complete beginners, or more experienced artists who wish to explore new ways of working.

Many of the materials will be supplied, but if you have any watercolours, (or other water based paints) brushes and watercolour paper please bring these with you. You are also asked to bring a medium sized jam jar, (for water) and a large, plain ceramic plate, (for use as a pallet).

Southsea Artist Kevin Dean

Kevin Dean trained at The Royal College of Art, he has illustrated numerous books, designed textiles and even decorative marble designs for a mosque in Abu Dhabi and regularly exhibits at a gallery in Dubai. He has been painting with watercolour for most of his life. Kevin uses other painting mediums, but watercolour is the one he always returns to. Over the years Kevin has taught watercolour in art colleges around the UK and abroad, in schools and at private workshops, working with complete beginners to seasoned professionals. He has given talks about decorative art and watercolour at the V&A and Dulwich Picture Gallery.
