For the second year running we awarded three graduates at the University of Portsmouth Graduate Show with our Strong Island Creative Graduates to Watch Awards, a winner for Photography, Illustration and Graphic Design.
As with last year, it was a tough choice for Graphic Design, with so many students producing such good work. One of the strongest posters on the wall in the exhibition was by Harry Stewardson, containing glimpses to a series of clean, sharp typography based on The Clash. Thanks to the staff I got a chance to see Harry’s book, a 57 page poster book all about The Clash’s debut album from 1977 ‘The Clash’. The book contained different posters each inspired by the different songs. The cover itself almost like the master tape label, pulling all of these designs together. The amount of creative typography involved in producing such a huge piece of work was really impressive and after speaking to Harry it was clear it was a labour of love with the band being a personal favourite.
We’re pleased to announce Harry Stewardson as this year’s Strong Island Creative Graduates to Watch Award winner for Graphic Design. We’ll be interviewing Harry for Strong Island very soon, for now check Harry’s work from the Graduate Show below and his website at:
