The University of Portsmouth Hindu society is a double award winning society, having been recognised as the Society of the year 2012/2013 and Fundraiser of the year 2012/2013, the fundraiser itself was JALWA. Portsmouth Hindu society organise and host a variety of cultural, educational and social events, in order to create an atmosphere i.e. a home away from home that the members are proud to be a part of. Students are encouraged to come together and share their knowledge with each other, to learn more about their community, culture and most importantly, themselves. Also as a non-profit organisation all funds raised are donated to the chosen charities. For this year’s Jalwa event (the 6th) will be supporting Great Ormand Street Hospital (GOSH), as well as Divya Seva Foundation UK. Jalwa is the society’s flagship event and over the last 5 years has raised over £24,000.
Jalwa is the Hindi translation to Charisma and the event is a talent competition and fashion show, presented and hosted by NHSF Portsmouth. Jalwa is a multicultural event involving other societies and students within the University of Portsmouth. This year’s event will be held in the Kings Theatre on the 19th of February 2014. The show itself is very similar to shows such as Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor. The event also sees a fashion show, choreographed by students of the society.
